The news cycle these days is often brutal, filled with headlines that are unsettling at best. But then a story will come along to remind us that there are still sweet, simple, beautiful things in the world-like an all-time classic love story.
And Karl and Donna Von Schwarz have a great story, even before they took it to the next level this week. The Youngstown, Ohio, couple were high school sweethearts who were married in 1956 and have been inseparable ever since, even continuing to reside on the street they grew up on. "They're really just such amazing people, I've never met anyone like them," their granddaughter Christina Von Schwarz says to local network WFAA. "They're definitely something to strive for in a relationship." But lately it's been tough because Donna has had some serious health problems, leaving her confined to a wheelchair and unable to move most of her body.
Last week, Karl promised that if she made it through her open-heart surgery, he'd get her a new engagement ring. She did just that, and off they went to pick out a new sparkler at JC Penney. But Karl did more than just buy his bride a ring-he got down on one knee and proposed all over again after 63 years. "It was great because it's a gal that I've loved all of my life," Karl told television station WFAA. "It was very easy. You know we've been together so long that we can't stay apart really."
The couple went viral after Christina tweeted about their tear-jerking proposal moment. "I'm just proud that it's as touching to us as it is to everyone else, and they get the recognition for how strong they really are," she said.
And about that new ring? "It's really beautiful," Donna tells WFAA. "It's gorgeous."
No, we're not crying, you're crying.
